Acclaimed Filipino Soprano Katrina Saga Inspires Students at Tunku Putra-HELP School

30 March, Kuching, Sarawak – Tunku Putra-HELP School was once again honored by the presence of internationally acclaimed soprano and vocal coach, Katrina Saga, who returned for a second year to share her expertise with students. As a guest teacher, she conducted engaging vocal and music classes for kindergarten and primary students while also lending her support to the school’s choir team and the Music Festival Choir Team.

Katrina Saga is a distinguished soprano and voice specialist, renowned for her exceptional vocal technique and artistry. She is an alumna of the prestigious Philippine Madrigal Singers, a two-time European Grand Prix winner, a UNESCO Artist for Peace, and the Grand Prix Winner of the 2016 LXIV International Choral Competition Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo. Since joining the Philippine Madrigal Singers in 2013, she has performed in numerous world tours across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States.

Beyond her international performances, Saga is a dedicated vocal coach, sharing her expertise with aspiring musicians. In the months leading up to the HELP Group of School Music Festival 2025, she has been actively mentoring students from Tunku Putra-HELP School (Kuching), Crescendo-HELP International School (Johor Bahru), and HELP International School (Kuala Lumpur). This marks her second time working with the students, having first joined the school’s Music Festival in 2024. Her visit aligns with Tunku Putra-HELP School’s commitment to providing holistic education and enriching students’ artistic and musical talents. Through her mentorship, students refined their vocal techniques and gained invaluable exposure to professional music training, strengthening their confidence and stage presence.

One of the highlights of her visit was her contribution to The HELP Group of Schools Music Festival Choir Team, who performed in Kuala Lumpur in February 2025. The festival brought together over 230 students from three schools, creating a dynamic and collaborative musical experience. Students who had the opportunity to learn from Saga shared their excitement and appreciation for her guidance.

Ryan Shareef, aged 12,  a Tunku Putra-HELP student who represented Team Malaysia at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in California in 2024 alongside his twin sister, Aleysha Shareef, expressed his gratitude for Saga’s mentorship. He shared that learning from Saga has significantly elevated their singing technique, allowing them to refine their vocal control, expand their range, and enhance their overall performance. 

Ayra Saphea, aged 14, who has been participating in the Music Festival since 2024, expressed her excitement about the opportunity. She described being part of the choir and learning from Saga as a truly rewarding journey. Through her guidance, she has been able to refine her vocal abilities and gain a deeper understanding of the beauty of music.

Parents were equally moved by the impact of this initiative. Sharifah Ashrina, a proud parent of a Primary 6 student, shared her heartfelt experience attending the festival. She and her family flew from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur to witness her daughter’s performance. She expressed how incredible it was to see her daughter, confidently singing on stage among new friends. Watching her child overcome her shyness and embrace the joy of performing was a deeply moving and proud moment for her as a parent.
